What Do You Need To Do If Anything?
The role of a farmer, an animal caretaker or animal industry participant is very important. Your cooperation in the project could help to prevent, or greatly reduce, epidemic disease spread and catastrophic economic damage to other farmers in Pennsylvania and the region. Participation in this project is completely voluntary at this time. But your help in providing information about your farm is critical.
It is USDA's long-term goal to build a system that can support rapid identification of all premises and animals that have been in direct contact with a animal disease within 48 hours. To meet this goal, the system must collect and record every movement from every animal or animal group. Hence, premise identification is vital to this effort. One can imagine the extraordinary effort this project will require. The support and cooperation of many will decrease the amount of field work needed to obtain the information, therefore expediting the development of a working system to detect and stop disease spread.
The specific role you can take in helping with this project involves being informed and watching for mailings that will solicit current contact and location information of your farm. Knowing where your farm is located and your contact information are key to making this system work. Field checking will follow only if we receive no response from mailings. Cooperation is very important to meet the goal of this project - protecting Pennsylvania's agriculture.
